POSITION SUMMARY:

The School Nurse at The Joshua School plays a vital role in supporting the physical and emotional well-being of students and staff. This position provides direct nursing care, manages medication administration, and supports students with complex medical needs through the development of individualized health plans. The School Nurse also ensures compliance with health regulations, contributes to the IEP process, and serves as a key liaison between families, school staff, and healthcare providers. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Student Care and Medical Services
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments according to physician orders and parental consent.
  • Monitor student health conditions, respond to illnesses and injuries, and provide first aid or emergency care as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student health records and medication logs in accordance with HIPAA and FERPA.
  • Collaborate with families and care providers to implement medical plans (e.g., seizure action plans, diabetes care).
  • Communicate health-related information to appropriate school staff when relevant to the safety and care of students.

  • Health Planning and IEP Support
  • As part of the IEP process for students with special healthcare needs, develop an Individualized Healthcare Plan (IHP) or an Emergency Care Plan (ECP).
  • The IHP will outline the student’s specific health needs and the nursing interventions required to support those needs during the school day.
  • Prior to each student’s IEP meeting, contact parents/guardians to review current medical information, including new or discontinued medications, allergy updates, and any other relevant health considerations or concerns.
  • Attend IEP meetings when appropriate to share medical insights and support planning for student health accommodations.

  • Staff Health Support
  • Conduct or coordinate staff physicals and health screenings as required by licensing or employment requirements.
  • Maintain health records and compliance for staff-related medical documentation, and clearances.
  • Serve as a wellness resource for staff and assist with health-related trainings or informational sessions.

  • Compliance and Documentation
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal health regulations, including immunization laws and medication policies.
  • Maintain inventory of medical supplies and ensure a clean, well-organized nursing station at all three campuses.
  • Participate in IEP/transition meetings to address health-related student accommodations.

  • Staff Trainings
  • Provide training to staff in QMAP (Qualified Medication Administration Personnel) certification as required by the State of Colorado for medication administration.
  • Facilitate CPR and First Aid certification or recertification training for all staff, ensuring the meeting of all health and safety requirements.
  • Track staff certifications and collaborate with the HR department to maintain up-to-date documentation and compliance.

Qualifications:

  • Required:
  • Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the state of Colorado.
  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification.
  • Ability to train and provide initial and refresher CPR/First Aid certifications training for staff.
  • Ability to become certified to train QMAP
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in emergency situations.
  • Comfort working with students with developmental disabilities.
  • Preferred:
  • Prior experience in a school, pediatric, or special education setting.
  • Familiarity with Medicaid documentation or school health protocols.
  • Ability to train staff on health and safety procedures (e.g. EpiPen use, seizure response).

Computer/Technical Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite software, Google Suite software and knowledge of data collection platform software. Familiarity with Relias preferred.
