This is a re-posting of JC-507097. This job control is being used to fill a position at the Fresno Fairgrounds in Fresno County, CA. 

Under the general direction of a Supervising Special Investigator I, the Investigator will conduct independent field investigations, work as part of a team, or act as a lead  on other investigators when assigned. As a Peace Officer under the California Penal Code, Section 830.3(d), the incumbent detects and/or verifies and enforces suspected violations  of the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) rules, regulations, and laws, as well as other related laws.


This is a Permanent Intermittent (PI) position that is limited to 1500 hours per year.

Applicants must have successfully completed a P.O.S.T. Peace Officer Basic Training Academy or Specialized Investigators’ Basic Academy. The applicant’s status with P.O.S.T. must be current.

Applicants must meet California Peace Officer hiring, physical, psychological, and background standards before a hire can be made.

Working Conditions

  • Lodging and per diem are provided by the department.
  • The position works primarily at the Fresno Fairgrounds (Fresno County) in a typical racetrack environment.
  • The position is required to work periodically at other California racetracks, fairs, and training facilities.
  • The position is required to work irregular hours, holidays, and weekends.
  • The position is required to travel frequently in Northern/Central California and occasionally throughout the State.
  • The position is not eligible for telework.

  • The position(s) require(s) Medical Clearance prior to being hired.
  • The position(s) require(s) Psychological Evaluation clearance prior to being hired.


Applicants must possess a current State of California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced Certificate. You will be required to provide a copy of your certificate prior to appointment.


In accordance with California Government Code, Section 1031, the employee shall meet the following minimum standards:

  1. Be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship. Any permanent resident alien shall be disqualified from holding a position if his or her application for citizenship is denied.
  2. Be at least 18 years of age.
  3. Be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal records.
  4. Be found to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition which might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer. For purposes of this section a medical examination, including psychological screen, shall be required prior to appointment.

  • Knowledge of investigation techniques and procedures
  • Knowledge of rules of evidence and court procedures
  • Knowledge of laws of arrest; search and seizure; legal rights of citizens; and service of legal process
  • A candidate who is bilingual in Spanish is preferred but not required. A Spanish-speaking incumbent must be able to pass a bilingual-Spanish fluency examination.
