Role Overview

The Controller is the firm’s senior financial operations leader, responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger, balance sheet, and day-to-day financial operations. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this role owns the close process and ensures the accuracy of the firm’s financial operations, including compliance across multiple state jurisdictions.

This role works closely with the FP&A Director, providing accurate accounting data and operational insight that support forecasting, budgeting, and financial analysis. The Controller specializes in financial operations and execution, bringing deep working knowledge of both accounting and financial planning without serving as a pure FP&A or transactional accounting role.

The Controller manages the finance operations team and oversees billing, collections, trust accounting, payroll, accounts payable and receivable, internal controls, audits, and financial systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the general ledger and balance sheet, leading monthly and annual close processes
  • Ensure accurate financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and firm standards
  • Maintain strong internal controls and resolve financial discrepancies
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, billing, collections, trust/IOLTA accounting, and general ledger activities
  • Ensure compliance with legal industry standards, multi‑state regulations, and trust accounting requirements
  • Coordinate audits and tax filings with external accountants, including multi‑state tax support
  • Manage and optimize financial systems, including SurePoint, Emburse, and related tools
  • Direct billing and collections to improve cash flow and reduce aged receivables
  • Partner with attorneys and staff to resolve billing issues and ensure client compliance
  • Establish and enforce billing, revenue recognition, and client financial policies
  • Collaborate with FP&A to support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
  • Execute financial initiatives to improve profitability, cash flow, and operational efficiency
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the finance operations team

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; MBA or Master’s degree preferred
  • 7+ years of progressive financial management experience
  • Law firm or professional services experience strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated ownership of the general ledger, balance sheet, and close process
  • Strong knowledge of legal billing systems and trust/IOLTA accounting
  • Experience managing and developing finance or accounting teams
  • Deep understanding of financial operations and accounting fundamentals
  • Working knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
  • Strong attention to detail, judgment, and problem‑solving skills
  • Clear communicator able to work effectively with legal, finance, and operations teams
  • Ability to thrive in a deadline‑driven environment

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and year-end performance based bonus.
  • Generous PTO and flexible work arrangements as applicable.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage.
  • 401(k) with match from first date of employment

We’re excited to meet passionate professionals who are ready to make an impact, and we warmly encourage you to apply and grow with the SDV team.
